Why Katy Trees Behave the Way They Do
Katy was rice and cattle country before it was neighborhoods. That matters more than it sounds. Most of what grows here now was planted, not left standing, so instead of a mixed-age natural woodland you get streets where every live oak went in the same season and is now hitting middle age together.
The soil underneath is heavy Gulf Coast clay. It swells when it rains and shrinks and cracks in drought, which is hard on root systems and is why so many Katy trees show drought stress faster than you would expect for their size. Clay also drains poorly, so a tree in a low spot can be waterlogged and drought stressed in the same year.
A Predictable Problem in the Older Subdivisions
The 1990s and early 2000s neighborhoods, Cinco Ranch among them, have a specific issue. Live oaks were planted close to sidewalks, driveways, and foundations back when they were saplings. Thirty years on, those root systems are lifting concrete and running into slabs, and the trees are large enough that the fix is no longer simple. We deal with this constantly.
Flooding and Tree Health
Properties near the Addicks and Barker reservoir flood pools have a tree problem most of the region does not. Prolonged inundation drowns root systems, and the damage is not visible right away. A tree that sat in standing water for days often looks fine for a season or two, then declines with no obvious cause.
If your property took water in a major flood event and a mature tree has been thinning since, that history is probably the explanation, and it is worth an assessment before the tree fails.
